Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year. I am Mrs. Swaekauski, the 5th grade special education teacher who will be working with your child this school year. I am looking forward to assisting your child, and to collaborating with you to make this a successful year.
This is my 7th year at Prairieview Elementary, and my 11th year of teaching overall. I began my career as a regular education 5th grade teacher for 4 years. When I attained my Master's Degree in Special Education, I decided to put it to good use here at Prairieview. I live in Naperville with my husband and two beautiful daughters, Abby and Aurora. I'm a very proud mommy, so you might just hear about them every now and then!
Curriculum Updates:
Our first two days were spent with learning rules & expectations, as well as some getting to know you activities. Next week, you will find the beginnings of our fifth grade curriculum. I will normally provide the updates on Reading & Math weekly, and then other subjects as tests or quizzes approach.
Reading: We begin our year with Tall Tales. The skills specifically targeted will be identifying story structure and distinguishing between exaggerated and realistic story elements. As a review, we will use our visualization skills and define unknown words using context clues.
Math: We will begin switching for Math class on Tuesday, August 30th. The first day will be spent going over materials, procedures, and looking at our Math textbook through a scavenger hunt. Then, we will begin reviewing our place values skills.
