Well, we have all survived our first full week back to school. This past week was full of many activities. Students once again took the MAP test in Math and Reading. Now, we teachers are busy taking a look at the data, and seeing a better picture of where our students are currently performing in those two subjects. We also continued some get-to-know-you activities, which you can view on display at our annual Curriculum Night. Curriculum Night takes place this year on Tuesday, September 6th, beginning at 6:30 PM. Students received a flyer to bring home today, which gives the details of our night together. I hope to see all of you on Tuesday!
Curriculum Updates:
Reading: We continue with Tall Tales. The skills specifically targeted will be identifying story structure and distinguishing between exaggerated and realistic story elements. As a review, we will use our visualization skills and define unknown words using context clues. We will also discuss and practice using similes and metaphors, which can be used to write a tall tale of their own!
Math: Today we started our first chapter, which includes place value, estimating, and addition and subtraction. We will continue through next week with rounding skills and estimating sums and differences. It would be great to practice rounding and estimation at home. Perhaps have students make a pretend shopping list and have them estimate the prices of everything. Have fun with it!
