One of the skills we are covering this week in Reading is Analogies. This is a skill that many students struggle with, yet is one that they will encounter for many years to come. The best way for students to approach an analogy is to identify the relationship between the two items. Most of these relationships are synonyms, antonyms, parts to whole, etc. Then they apply the same relationship to the other part of the analogy. Here are some good websites to practice analogies:

Curriculum Updates:
Reading: Our reading skill this week focuses on the structure of stories, or in other words, narrative text. We will focus on being able to identify the main characters, setting (when & where story takes place), and the plot. The plot will include the problem, a summary of the beginning, middle, and end of the story, and finally the resolution of the problem. A great way to practice story structure at home is to have your child identify all the parts of a story while watching a favorite TV show. We'll also be covering analogies this week.
Math: Students have just finished Chapter 2 on multiplying whole numbers. Now we will move forward to Chapter 3, dividing whole numbers. This chapter covers long division, dividing by both one and two digit divisors. We are really looking for students to master dividing by one digit, so practice at home is greatly encouraged!
