Newsletter 10/3-10/7

Here's What's Happening...

English/Language Arts: We got to start vocabulary for our next text, "Winds of Hope."  This week, we will focus on monitoring and clarifying as we read, as well as learning about different text structures.  We will also begin another text, "Wheelchair Sports."  This text will bring us back to working with Central Idea, as well as continuing work with text structure.  Finally, we will collaborate with Mrs. Csorba this week to begin the process of selecting a topic for their expository essay, focused on an inventor/invention of their choice.

Science: We will use the online simulation component this week to continue our investigation of how animals grow.

Social Studies: We will continue to look at the journeys of Christopher Columbus.  Students will be exposed to multiple texts about his voyages and will utilize the information they find in order to answer the question: Should Columbus be viewed as a hero or a villain?

Advanced Math:  On Monday, we will review for our Unit 1 Test, which will be on Tuesday.  Then, students will have an opportunity to do some reflection on their work in the first unit as well as finish up their Take It To Go project.  At the end of the week, we will  move into Unit 2, which introduces Ratios.  Look for a family sheet to come home this week to see what students will be learning in this unit!

Important Info:

Midterm Already!

It is SO hard to believe, but we are halfway through our first trimester already!  As of right now, we have limited grades in the gradebook.  However, I do anticipate this will increase in the coming weeks.  Please know that I firmly believe that student learning should not be assessed until they have had ample opportunity to practice and work with the content.  Hence, the grades you see should be a true and accurate reflection of their learning.

Midterm is a great opportunity to set some goals to work on for the rest of the first trimester.  I'll be checking in with students to ask what they are hoping to achieve by the end of the first trimester!
