Here's What's Happening...
English/Language Arts: We will begin our new unit, entitled Nature's Fury this week. We start by looking at our essential questions for the unit, followed by a gallery walk in which students will view a variety of pictures, graphs, and short informative texts and they will need to assess their initial inferences from those items in the gallery walk. Then, students will receive instruction on paraphrasing vs plagiarism and do some practice with these skills. In writing, we move into our second writing type, informative writing. Students will need to prepare for a baseline writing this week by gathering information on a topic they know a lot about. Finally, we move on to introducing Word Work List 6 words this week with our sort and definitions activity, as well as the practice Slides.
Social Studies: We will dive in to Chapter 6, Lesson 1 this week. The first part of our lesson discusses life for artisans and apprentices, as well as those who worked on farms. Students will be introduced to the variety of "jobs" that existed in early colonial times. The second part of our lesson discusses triangular trade routes, as well as the concept of the Middle Passage, and the difficulties faced during this portion of the trade journey. Students will have a graded assignment on this material on Thursday.
Advanced Math: This week, we begin the concepts covered in Topic 5, Multiplying Fractions & Mixed Numbers. We begin with a focus on multiplying fractions and whole numbers, then move to multiplying fractions. While students frequently pick up the standard algorithm for these skills very quickly, we spend more of our time discussing how we can model these skills, in order to help them understand why the standard algorithm works. There will be a Homework Review for these two skills on Friday.
