Here's What's Happening...
English/Language Arts: We wrapped up our work with summarizing last week and will now shift our focus to the concept of inferencing. Students will learn that making inferences involves taking text evidence and adding your own knowledge (schema) in order to determine something new about the text that hasn't been stated. They will engage in a variety of activities to practice making inferences in different ways. In addition to inferencing, students will learn about our word work choice board for practice activities, which will help them prepare for a word work quiz at the end of the week. We will also continue working on building our writing stamina and providing feedback on our writing.
Science: This week, students will discuss the importance and use of models to help us understand ideas that we cannot easily see. We will also complete some activities and investigations that help visualize distances and sizes of stars in relation to the earth and the sun.
Social Studies: We didn't get to the Columbian Exchange activity last week, so that is where we will begin our week. Then, students will explore a variety of resources to gather evidence to make their decision of whether Columbus should be viewed as a hero or villain. Their claim on this topic will be a part of the checkpoint they will take at the end of the week.
Advanced Math: We got a little behind in our schedule this week, and didn't get to area practice activities until Friday. (Check out some pics of the students working below!). After taking a second glance at the unit, and in light of the fact that we have a 3 day weekend, the graded assessment will be put on hold and combined with our next concept - the area of parallelograms. Students will engage in activities to help them devise the formula for finding the area of a parallelogram.
