English/Language Arts: Looking at the week ahead, students will continue their study of similes and metaphors. They will also engage in our first narrative writing lesson, which focuses on defining what a small moment is, as well as beginning an anchor chart of strategies to generate ideas for narrative writing. They will have the opportunity to write about an idea using one of those strategies. We will also dive into our first text of Unit 1, which is a poem entitled "Mother to Son," written by Langston Hughes. We will put our simile and metaphor skills to work as we work through this poem. Finally, students will be introduced to the Word Work List 3 word parts, and will complete the word sort and definition activity.
Social Studies: We are moving forward to Ch. 4, L.3, which focuses on Life in New Spain. Students will learn about Esteban and his search for the fictional city of gold, Cibola. Then, they will learn about the different levels of society in New Spain, as well as the different systems set up in society through plantations and encomiendas.
Advanced Math: We get started with Topic 2 this week, which focuses on Equivalent Expresssions. In the first part of this topic, we focus on the following properties: Identity Property of Addition & Multiplication, Zero Property of Multiplication, Commutative Property of Addition & Multiplication, and the Associative Property of Addition and Multiplication. We will explore how to use these properties to become better problem solvers!
Important Info:
PRIDE! Awards!
We were so excited to find a way to bring back our PRIDE! award celebrations this year. Though it looks a little different, the sentiment is exactly the same: recognizing the amazing students we have at PV! This year, our Encore team decided it would not select an Encore Exclamation winner, due to the current learning environment they are providing. So, the fifth grade teachers decided to keep the exclamation going strong by selecting an Everything Exclamation winner. This is a student who demonstrates all aspects of PRIDE: Positive Attitude, Respect, Improvement, Determination, and Empathy. I am thrilled to announce that the August/September Everything Exclamation winner was from our classroom! Let's give a HUGE shout out to Makayla for her recognition!
Planning Ahead!
Parent Teacher conferences this year will be held virtually during the first week of November. While the conference days on the calendar are listed as Monday, November 2nd from 3-6pm, and Wednesday, November 4th from 3-8pm, teachers are given the flexibility to schedule conferences at times that fit their own schedule needs. I wanted to let you know that due to an ongoing committment on Wednesday evenings at 5pm, I am not able to have conferences on Wednesday evening. I will plan another date either the week before or after in order to ensure there are enough options to meet your needs. Be on the lookout for a Sign Up Genius in the near future!
