Newsletter 10/19-10/23

Here's What's Happening...

English/Language Arts: We will dive into looking at the skill of story structure this week, and students will learn how to complete a story mountain graphic organizer for literature texts.  We will get the opportunity to practice this with a classic Dr. Seuss story, "The Sneetches."  They will also continue working on narrative writing, as well as Word Work List 3 practice.

Science: We didn't get to Mount Nose last week, so we will explore using the Mount Nose model with constellations this upcoming week.  We will also go back to the SIM in order to investigate what causes the yearly pattern of stars we see.

Social Studies: We spent last week focused on the search for Cibola, and learning about different ways to take notes.  This week, we will learn about the levels of society in New Spain, as well as understanding the encomienda and plantations systems.  We will be continuing to expand our note-taking skills through this lesson, and students will most likely complete a graded assignment at the end of the week.

Advanced Math: We start the week with a Homework Review on Topic 2, Lessons 1-3.  Remember, students are able to use their notes and resources for this assignment.  However, they are still encouraged to practice and prepare.  There are several options for practice that they were given today in their Math Google Classroom.  After that, we will move on to two skills that are pre-requisite for the next section of Topic 2. The first is divisibility rules, and the second is prime factorization.  Students should expect a small quiz on these skills on Friday.

Book Project!
This week, students were introduced to our Unit 1 Book Project.  This project requires students to demonstrate their understanding of the skills that they learn throughout our unit (Theme, summarizing, point of view, figurative language, to name a few).  The first step is for students to select a book to read for this project.  They were given the following guidelines for selecting their book:
  1. Needs to be a FICTION book!

  2. Needs to be a JUST RIGHT book!

  3. Must be a book you have never read before!

  4. Can be a book you’ve already started if you have only read the first few chapters. (Less than ¼ way through)

Once they have decided upon a book, they need to complete a Google Form, which has been posted in ELA Google Classroom, on the Stream page. This form needs to be completed by Tuesday, October 20th.

This will be a long term project, and is meant to be done independently. I will provide checkpoints along the way, so that everyone is aware of approximately where they should be in their project. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions!
