Newsletter 11/16-11/20

Here's What's Happening...

English/Language Arts: We will focus on our last reading skill of Unit 1, which is all about perspective/point of view.  We will practice this skill with our final text, entitled Teammates.  Students will have the opportunity to practice this skill through stations this week, which will also include practice for Word Work List 4, and continued practice on RACES responses.  Students will have a quiz on Word Work List 4 on Thursday, as well as an assessment on Teammates on Friday.  We will also be working on using commas correctly this week!

Science: Students will take the PreTest for our next Science Unit, which is entitled Ecosystem Restoration.  We will discuss what an ecosystem is, as well as what an ecologist is, which is the role students will take on during this unit.  Students will wrap up the week by creating their own model ecosystem! (Please note: Students will need an empty plastic water bottle for this activity.  Please have this prepared for Friday!)

Social Studies: We will finish Chapter 5, Lesson 1 this week, as we dive into a look at the Jamestown colony.  Students will take notes in various ways this week, and then will complete a Lesson 1 Checkpoint on Wednesday.

Advanced Math: Students will use Monday to analyze their performance on the Topic 2 test as well as the Topic 3 Pre Test.  They will also reflect on their performance for the Topic 2 test.  Then, the rest of the week we will begin Topic 3.  In lesson 1, students will be introduced to understanding equations, and how to decide if a number is a solution for an equation.  Then, we will work to understand the importance of keeping balance when solving equations, and then apply that understanding to solving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division equations.

Important Info:
Book Project Update
Students should have their book for the Unit 1 book project read at this point.  They can be working on all parts of the book project slides, with the exception of the point of view question.  They will be able to complete this slide later this week, after we complete our lesson and practice on point of view/perspective.  The final project is due on Tuesday, November 24th!
