Newsletter 11/9-11/13

Here's What's Happening...

English/Language Arts: This week, we will return to our narrative writing unit, with lessons that focus on letting other author's words awaken our own, as well as telling the story from inside of it.  We will also focus on character traits, and use what we learn about character traits to write a RACES response about the text we read last week, "A Boy Called Slow."  Students will have an opportunity to practice Word Work List 4 words by completing the Word Work List 4 Slides, and we finish the week with an introduction to our next text, entitled Teammates.

Science: This will be a transition week for Science, as we wrap up our Patterns of Earth and Sky unit, and prepare for our next unit, Ecosystem Restoration.  Students will enjoy a Bill Nye video on the Seasons, and then a Mystery Science lesson about Leaves.  Students will need to have a leaf, crayons, paper, and scissors for the Mystery Science lesson, which will occur on Friday.

Social Studies: We will begin Chapter 5, which focuses on the English colonies.  As we begin lesson 1 this week, students will learn about the lost colony of Roanoke, as well as the Battle of the Spanish Armada.  They will take outline notes, and have the opportunity to take a deeper look at the lost colony of Roanoke and what may have happened to it!

Advanced Math: We will be wrapping up Topic 2 this week.  On Monday, students will engage in applying the properties, GCF, and LCM to real world problem solving situations.  Then we will review for a Homework Review on Topic 2, Lessons 4-7, which students will complete for homework rather than in class.  On Wednesday, we will review all of Topic 2 in preparation for the Topic 2 Test on Thursday.  We wrap up the week by taking the PreTest for Topic 3 on Friday.

Congratulations to Eli, who was the October winner of the Empathy PRIDE! award.  We were so happy to celebrate her achievement!

Possible Adaptive Pause
As you probably know, Dr. Wise sent an email last Monday informing our district that he will recomend that we take what is called an "adaptive pause" to our current learning model, beginning November 23rd until January 19th.  This will move our entire class to full remote learning for those five and a half weeks.  You can expect students to follow a schedule similar to what they have right now, but with some minor tweaks due to Art and Music class schedules changing a bit.  As soon as our schedule is finalized, I will send it to you so you have an understanding of what your child's day will look like.  One thing I can guarantee is that it will be a very different experience than remote learning that occurred in the spring!
