English/Language Arts: We begin our second part of Unit 1, which engages students in a novel study using the technique of literature circles. Students have been assigned a novel at their appropriate level, and will be grouped with other students reading that novel to complete literature circle activities. These activities include the following:
- Super Summarizer: Write a summary of the reading section
- Discussion Director: Develop thick questions and possible answers for the reading selection
- Word Wizard: Find unknown vocabulary words in the reading assignment and use context clue skills to define them
- Literary Luminary: Select a passage from the reading to practice for fluency and inflection
Students will need to read their given assignment and complete the digital role sheet for their lit circle meeting. During the lit circle meeting, students will share their independent work and then collaborate as a group to develop a group product for the role sheet.
In addition to the lit circle activities, students will engage in more narrative writing work, which includes writing a flash draft of the story they will take through multiple steps until it is complete, as well as determining what. their story is really about, and ensuring it has a story arc. They will also complete the Word Work List 5 Sort and Definitions!
Social Studies: Now that we just celebrated Thanksgiving, we will take a look at the historical reasons behind this celebration as we move into our 3rd lesson of Chapter 5, entitled The First Colonies. We will explore the founding of the colonies of Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay Colony. Students will complete a lesson checkpoint at the end of the week!
Advanced Math: Moving forward in Topic 3, our focus now switches to Inequalities. We will explore the differences between equations and inequalities and how to write inequalities for various situations. Then, students will learn how to graph inequalities on number lines, as well as how to solve inequalities and then graph their results. They will have an Inequalities Quick Check on Friday!
