Newsletter 2/8-2/12

Here's What's Happening...

English/Language Arts: This week, we will continue work with text structures, expanding our skills to include comparing and contrasting texts with different text structures.  They will complete stations, where they continue practicing text structures, answering text dependent questions about the Tropical Cyclone article we worked with last week, and working on List 7 Word Work Slides.  We finish the week off with diving into a deeper discovery about what makes something a natural disaster.

Science: We will focus on Social Studies this week before starting our next Chapter in Science.

Social Studies: We got a little behind with Ch. 6, L.3 this past week, so we will be finishing it up on Monday and students will take the checkpoint on Tuesday.  Instead of a test for Chapter 6, students will have an in-class, open book quiz on Wednesday and will complete a virtual Trade Fair project.  They will receive information about the project on Wednesday.

Advanced Math: Topic 6 focuses on dividing fractions and mixed numbers.  We will begin our lessons this week by focusing solely on dividing fractions and whole numbers.  Students will learn how to use a number line to model both a fraction divided by a whole number and a whole number divided by a fraction.  Then, they will also learn the standard algorithm for dividing fractions.  Fair warning, they may come home singing "Keep, Change, Flip!"  They will have a short graded checkpoint on these skills on Thursday.

Important Info:

Congratulations to Kathryn, who was the January PRIDE! winner for Respect!

Valentine's Day Information
As I said last week, in order to maintain safety, students will not be exchanging paper Valentine cards this year.  Rather, we will spend some time on Thursday giving students time to create their own virtual valentine via Google Slides, which will then be put together into one slide show for all of our classmates to enjoy!  We will be spending our last hour of the day on Thursday doing our virtual Valentine activities!

Parent Teacher Conferences
I am looking forward to "seeing" you all for Parent Teacher Conferences this week.  I will send you an email with the Zoom link the morning of your conference.  Much like last time, I will share your child's self-reflection, as well as update you on their winter data points.  If you have any specific questions or concerns that you would like to discuss, please send me an email to let me know.

Schedule of Events
  • Friday, February 12th: No School, P/T Conference Trade Day
