Here's What's Happening...
English/Language Arts: Students will learn about text structures this week. This helps them prepare for using text structures in their informational writing. The five types of text structures are: description, cause/effect, problem/solution, compare/contrast, and sequence. We will dig into the tropical cyclone text to determine which text structures were used. Students will have the opportunity to practice with partners to identify text structures as well. At the end of the week, students will prepare to redraft their informational writing, and then complete the redraft on Friday. They will also work on the Word Work List 7 word sort and definitions.
Social Studies: We will dig in to Chapter 6, Lesson 3 this week, taking a look at every day life in the colonies. Students will learn what school was like back in the colonial days, as well as the types of books they read and the food they ate. They will also learn about the Great Awakening to see how religion once again became important at this time. They will complete a lesson check point at the end of the week.
Advanced Math: As you know, with the changing schedules of everything, I decided to push the Topic 5 test to this week. We will spend time on Monday and Tuesday reviewing for the test, and then students will take the Topic 5 test on Wednesday. We will finish up the week with taking the Topic 6 PreTest, as well as doing our reflection on Topic 5.
Important Info:
Common Assessments
This week, students will take the two reading common assessments for our winter assessment cycle. On Tuesday, students will take the Informational Text assessment, which asks students to read an informational text passage, answer 7 multiple choice questions about it, and then write an extended response for the final question. On Wednesday, students will take the Literature text assessment. This assessment begins with questions about word work and context clue skills, then moves on to present a poem with questions about the poem after that. These assessments are one small piece of evaluating how students are progressing this year!
Valentines
In case you didn't see in the weekly PV announcements, there will be no exchanging of paper Valentine cards this year. We will do a virtual Valentine exchange instead, along with enjoying some virtual Valentine fun on February 11th. More details to come next week!
