Newsletter 3/1-3/5

Here's What's Happening...

English/Language Arts: This week, students will have the opportunity to watch the newscasts we made, as well as complete a reflection of their work on this project.  In addition, they will begin Word Work List 8 with the sort and definitions.  We will move on to the next text in our Nature's Fury unit, which is entitled Eight Days: A Story of Haiti.  We will read the story, review context clues, and students will use their context clue skills to define vocabulary from the story.  We wrap up the week with stations, in which students will answer text dependent questions about the story, complete perspective activities about it, as well as a RACES response.

Science: We didn't get to discussing scientific theories last week, so we will begin with that activity this week.  We are wrapping up the second chapter of our Ecosystem Restoration unit, meaning students will be asked to complete another Scientific Argument on Tuesday.  They will also review the flow of matter and energy with a food chain activity.

Social Studies: This week, we will do an overview of what's been happening in other areas of the Americas while the English were busy setting up the 13 orginal colonies.  This sets the stage for understanding what led to the French and Indian War, which is where we will end this week.

Advanced Math: We will begin the week with reviewing for our Topic 6 Test, which students will take on Wednesday.  Then, they will take the Topic 8 Pretest, and engage in Number Corner activities that focus on multiplying decimals, as well as finding quotients and multiplying those quotients by 10 or 1/10.
