Newsletter 3/8-3/12

Here's What's Happening...

English/Language Arts: This week, students will be introduced to the project for the end of Unit 2.  In this project, students will select a specific natural disaster (Ex: Hurricane Katrina), conduct research about it, and then write magazine articles about it.  They will write 3 different articles, each with a different text structure.  In addition, they will find pictures and maps that enhance their articles, and write captions for them.  When they are finished, they will complete a video reflection explaining the text structures they used.  This week will be focused on initial research and writing their first article.  Students will also work on Word Work List 8 Slides.

Science: We will get started on Chapter 3 of our Ecosystem Restoration unit.  This chapter focuses on the question "Why are the cecropia trees not growing and thriving in the soil?"  We will begin by investiagting soil, and comparing and contrasting data from the investigation.

Social Studies: We will finish up learning about the French and Indian War, and collaborating in groups to create a timeline of the events that have happened to that point.  Students will also complete a pretest for our next chapter, which focuses on the events leading up to the American Revolution.

Advanced Math: This week, we will begin Topic 8, which focuses on Integers.  Students will learn about what integers are, as well as how to represent scenarios with an integer.  In addition, they will work with integers by comparing and ordering them, as well as learn about absolute value.  They will have a Homework Review on Lessons 1-3 on Friday.
