Newsletter 3/15-3/19

Here's What's Happening...

English/Language Arts: This week, students will continue to work on their magazine article project by working on Article #2.  In addition, we will engage in a mini lesson and practice of different sentence types and how to use different sentence types in our writing.  Students will also continue practice with Word Work List 8 words.

Science: We will continue to investigate soil and make a hypothesis about which soil would lead to plants that are growing and thriving.

Social Studies: Students will get to participate in an activity called "The King's M & Ms."  This activity gets students thinking about how Britain imposed taxes on the colonies, and helps them relate to why the colonists were so upset.  Then, they will read about the Stamp Act to connect to their experience to the activity.

Advanced Math: We continue with Topic 8 this week, focusing on the following skills: Graphing integers on a coordinate plane (expanding to all 4 quadrants), reflecting points over the x or y-axis, finding the distance between points, and applying skills to problem solving situations.

Important Info:

CoGAT Testing
This week, students will take the CoGAT tests.  These tests are used for a variety of reasons, including helping identify students who may qualify for gifted services, as well as a piece of determining class placements at Lakeview.  These are not tests the students can study for, as they do not directly assess the content or skills that students are taught this year.  We do ask students to give their best efforts, and you can help at home by making sure they get a good night's sleep and have a good breakfast in the morning.  Our testing schedule can be found below.

CAP Presentation
Students will also engage in the Child Abuse Prevention program this week, on Thursday.  Presenters from the YWCA will deliver their program via a live-stream presentation.  This presentation is always done in a manner that creates a safe, confidential atmosphere for students to participate and learn about these important concepts.  I am available for students to discuss any questions or concerns that may arise after the presentation, and will have the ability to follow up with the presenters if necessary as well.
