Newsletter 4/26-4/30

Here's What's Happening...

English/Language Arts: This week, we take a look at the final text relating to the American Revolution, which is entitled "Katie's Trunk".  Students will engage in vocabulary work, summarizing, and station work with this text.  They will also review List 9 word work, and will have a quiz on these word parts on Friday.  Finally, they will complete a baseline argument essay on Thursday!

Science: Students will write a scientific argument this week for why the cecropia trees are not growing and thriving in the restoration project area.  They will also identify some action steps that could be taken to help the cecropia trees grow and thrive in the project area.

Social Studies: We didn't get to the Lesson 3 checkpoint last week, so students will complete that activity on Monday.  Then, we will play a review game called Trashketball on Wednesday, which will help students be in a good mindset for Chapter 8 Social Studies test, which will occur on Thursday.  They will have the opportunity to use their notes and resources (but not the book) on the test.  On Friday, they will have a breakout activity pertaining to the Road to the Revolution - this will be completed during the asynchronous afternoon!

Advanced Math: We will review the Topic 9 test, and students will complete a reflection on their work for this topic.  I am planning to have students bring these reflections home to share with you, and I would ask that you sign and return it to show that you have reviewed it.  There will also be a place for your comments if you have any!  We will also review the breakout activity they had to complete this past Friday during asynchronous work time.  We will talk about the determination needed when completing these activities, as well as some of the flexible and critical thinking needed.  We'll also discuss some strategies that can be helpful when working through these activities.  At the end of the week, students will take the Topic 10 Pretest, which focuses on Ratios.  We will not have Math every day this week due to IAR testing.

Important Info:

IAR Testing This Week!
This week, students will be taking the ELA IAR tests.  These will take place on Tuesday, and Wednesday from 8:40-10:25, and Thursday from 8:40-9:15AM.  Please make sure your child's Chromebook is fully charged each night, as well as making sure they get a good night's rest & a good breakfast in the morning.  Thank you for your help!
