Newsletter 10/25-10/29

Here's What's Happening...

English/Language Arts: We will continue our work with Theme this week, in particular focusing on understanding the difference between theme and summarizing, as well as finding evidence from the text to support what the theme is.  We will do a mini lesson on personification, as well as Word Work List 4 Extension Practice activities.  Students will take the Word Work List 4 quiz on Thursday.  We will also continue our narrative writing unit with a lesson about how ideas can spark from reading another author's work.

Science: We will review our Scientific Explanations and wrap up Chapter 2 by taking another look at the artifact.  Students will utilize their new learning to connect to why pieces of the artifact look the way they do.  They will also identify a constellation on the artifact.

Social Studies: One of the lenses we will use for our colonization unit is geography.  Therefore, will begin this unit by learning about the five themes of geography.

Advanced Math:  We didn't get to unit prices last week, so that is where we will begin this week. Then, we will practice the skills we have learned so far in preparation for a quiz on those skills on Thursday. We will also work on a variety of number corner activities this week.

Important Info:

Halloween Party Information!
We are excited for our Halloween celebration on Friday, October 29th.  Here are some important pieces of information to remember:
  • Students will NOT wear costumes to school.  They should bring their costume in a bag and will be provided the opportunity to change into the costume after lunch.  Boys and girls will go to separate rooms in order to change. They will NOT have access to a bathroom, so they should plan to be able to put their costume on with the clothes they wear that day.  They can do simple makeup, keeping in mind they will only have about 10 minutes to change.  As was stated before,  please leave any parts of costumes that may be seen as a weapon at home, as well as extremely gory/scary costumes.
  • Students may NOT bring in treats to share with the class.  They will receive a treat bag at the end of our Halloween celebration.
  • If the weather cooperates, we will hold our Halloween parade beginning at 2:10PM.  You may line up starting at the doors at the back of the building and wrap around the front of the school.
Book Project Update!
Students were told that they should begin reading their books this week.  On Friday, I handed out a packet with organizers to help them collect information as they read, which will help them be well prepared for when they begin working on the final project!
