Newsletter 11/1-11/5

Here's What's Happening...

English/Language Arts: This week, we will review context clues and use our context clues skills to define important vocabulary words for our next text, entitled "A Boy Called Slow."  Then, students will learn and review using sentence starters to show that they are citing evidence from text.  They will utilize this skill when answering text dependent questions about "A Boy Called Slow."  During stations, students will complete a story structure mountain for the story, as well as a write a RACES response that connects to theme.  We wrap up the week with a writing lesson that teaches students how to tell the story from inside of it.

Science: We will begin Chapter 3 of Patterns of Earth and Sky, which focuses on the question "Why do we see different stars at different times of the year?"  We will begin by utilizing the sim to gather evidence of this phenomenon and expand the use of the Mount Nose model to help answer this question.

Social Studies: We will wrap up learning about the five themes of geography by engaging in some station work.  Then, we will move forward into using cause and effect skills to learn about the lost colony of Roanoke.  Students will engage in some research in order to develop their opinion about what happened in the colony of Roanoke.

Advanced Math:  We continue moving forward with Unit 2, learning about comparing ratios and utilizing ratio tables with larger quantities. They will also utilize their ratio skills for solving real world problems.

Veteran's Day Information

On Thursday, November 11th, we will be celebrating Veterans Day! Due to our continued social distancing guidelines and our ongoing efforts to keep everyone safe, this year's celebration will be a video tribute in honor of our veterans. An important part of our video will be photos of any/all veterans that are related to our Panther staff or students. To help us with this, we would love for you to send in a photo or two of your family veteran(s)!

If you would like to contribute to our video, then please follow these directions:

1. Email your veteran's picture(s) to jdefors@ccsd66.org

2. Please include the following information:

  a. Veteran’s name

  b. Branch of the military

  c. Years served in the military (Ex. 1998-2007)

  d. The staff member or student (name and grade) your veteran is related to and their relation (mom, dad, uncle, sister, etc.).
Please have all pictures and information submitted by next Friday, November 5th. Thank you very much for your contribution... and a special thank you to all of our veterans! We appreciate you!

In addition, students received information earlier this week about the opportunity to take part in our annual Veteran's Day Essay activity.  Students can write a short essay describing what Veteran's Day means to them, and they have the opportunity to be selected to share part of their thoughts on our Veteran's Day video.  This is optional, but I always encourage my students to give it a go!
