Here's What's Happening...
English/Language Arts: This week, we will learn about Similes and Metaphors, and apply our close reading skills to our first Unit 1 text, which is a poem written by Langston Hughes entitled, "Mother to Son." Students will work in stations to write their initial answers to the essential questions of Unit 1, as well as to practice similes/metaphors, and practice working with Word Work List 3 word parts. On Thursday, we will do a whole class review of Word Work List 3 before students take the quiz that day. We wrap up our week with our first narrative writing lesson, which focuses on teaching students about small moments, and having them think of small moments that happened with important people in their life and choose one to write about.
Social Studies: We didn't get to the checkpoint this week, so students will complete it on Monday after they finish working on the concept maps they are creating for this lesson. We will spend the rest of the week reviewing for the Chapter 4 test, which students will take on Friday. The best way for students to prepare for this test is to review the notes we have taken, as well as the checkpoints they completed throughout the chapter.
Advanced Math: We didn't get to the Surface Area checkpoint on Friday, so students will take that on Monday. They will also have a chance to continue working on their "Take It To Go" project, in which they are designing a model of a take out container for either a sandwich, a salad, or a slice of pizza. We will spend a few days reviewing our entire unit in order to be prepared for a Unit 1 test on Thursday. Students can review all their homework assignments, Desmos assignments, prior checkpoints and quizzes, and their notes to prepare for this test. In addition, they will bring home a sheet with review problems on Monday (complete with an answer key for the adults!)
Side Note: I wnat to recognize that we only have 2 assignments in the gradebook at the midpoint of this trimester. Because this curriculum is a different way of approaching Math, we really want to ensure students have multiple opportunities to practice in a variety of ways before we take an assignment for a formal grade. This upcoming week, we will have three graded assignments (the container project, the surface area checkpoint, and the unit assessment.) Be sure to check PowerSchool next weekend to see their updated grade.
