Newsletter 1/31-2/4

Here's What's Happening...

English/Language Arts: We didn't get to finish editing our narratives this past week, so we will finish it up on Monday by editing for organization.  Then, students will have Monday and Tuesday to make any final changes, with their final copy of their narrative being due on Wednesday.  They will also do some practice with Word Work List 7 words, in preparation for a quiz on Wednesday.  We will also get started on our second ELA Unit, which is entitled "Nature's Fury."  We'll introduce the essential questions, do a gallery walk to get our thoughts going about natural disasters, and complete a baseline informational writing piece.   Please know that we are being mindful of the fact that many students were affected by this summer's tornado, and will be presenting the information in this unit in a sensitive manner.  If you feel that your learner may have any difficulty with this unit, please reach out to me so we can discuss and make a plan to ensure your learner is comfortable.

Science: We will work on the skill of synthesizing, as students will  put together information from various sources in order to create a new understanding about how animals grow.  They will also engage in activities to help understand the role of food in an ecosystem.

Social Studies: Students will begin their colony project by working together in their small groups to set norms that they agree to follow in order to collaborate well together, as well as what role they will perform throughout the project.  Then they will begin making initial decisions about what will make their colony successful.

Advanced Math:  We fell a little behind, so we are reviewing on Monday for our quiz on Tuesday.  Then we will move forward into the last part of this unit, which focuses on comparing fractional lengths, as well as calculating area with fractional dimensions.

Important Info:

Valentines Information!
Students will be allowed to exchange Valentine cards this year. If they choose to bring Valentines, they must bring a Valentine for every student in our class. They may also bring in a packaged treat to give to their classmates as well. These treats will not be opened during school, but rather sent home for the students to enjoy. Please note that we do have students with nut allergies in our class, so please be mindful of this if you purchase treats. I will also send home a class list of student names if students want to address their Valentines.
