Newsletter 2/28-3/4

Here's What's Happening...

English/Language Arts: We worked really hard on learning about how to put geography into our writing, so we didn't get to the lesson about writing to think.  In this lesson, students will read through their flash draft and find places that their writing leads to questions, which can then lead to finding more information to add to their writing.  We will also take a look at the next skill of sequencing, which is an important part of understanding informational text.  Students will engage in station work, where they will continue to practice making inferences from maps, work on review activities for Word Work List 8, and continue to work on sequencing.  Students will have a quiz on Word Work List 8 on Friday.

Science: We get started on Chapter 2 this week by introducing the Chapter 2 question: Why aren't the cecropia trees growing and thriving in the project area?  Students will read the book "Energy Makes It All Go" and complete the Anticipation Guide for this text.

Social Studies: Students will share out their colony brochures and students will have the opportunity to vote for their favorites for "The Colonial Awards"!

Advanced Math:  We move forward into decimal multiplication and division this week.  Students will learn about using models to show and understand decimal multiplication, and then use area models and the standard algorithm to multiply decimals.  Then, we will explore models to understand decimal division, and begin the first part of a lesson about long division.

Important Info:

Mitigation Changes!
As you know, starting Monday, February 28th, the mask mandate in schools will be dropped, and therefore students have the option of wearing a mask in school. We spent a couple days last week talking through this change, especially the understanding that we need to be respectful of each person's choice. We also discussed how to respectfully advocate for our needs and problem solve if it is not easy to come to an agreement that works for everyone involved. We revisited the idea that there will be a wide range of emotions as we enter this next stage of going to school amidst the pandemic. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you or your learner have concerns as we make this transition.

TGFD Program Begins!
This week, we will begin the Too Good for Drugs program, which is sponsored by the DuPage County Sheriff's Department. In this program, Corporal Albright will come to our classroom each week to present an important lesson focused on helping our students gain valuable skills to help maneuver difficult situations they may encounter in the coming years. The first part of the program really focuses on goal setting and communication skills. You should expect a handout this week that tells you more about the program.
