Here's What's Happening...
English/Language Arts: Students will continue working on the newscast project, where students will be working in small groups to write a script to share important information about a natural disaster. They will also work on the Word Work List 10 slides this week.
Social Studies: We will engage in a socratic seminar discussion about slavery, based upon the work students did last week. Then, we will move forward into the first two lessons of the next chapter, which basically fills in the gaps of what has been happening in the Spanish and French settlements of the New World. Students will once again engage in a jigsaw activity, where they will be responsible for gathering the most important ideas and events from the lesson they are assigned, and then will teach that information to a classmate.
Advanced Math: This week, we will begin Unit 6, which focuses on Expressions and Equations. We begin with using a variety of ways to represent equations and use these to help solve those equations. Students will learn about using a balance scale, a tape diagram, and a balanced hanger to represent a variety of equations and match them to various situations as well.
Important Info:
Headphones/Earbuds Needed!
Please check with your learner to see if they have working headphones or earbuds at school. They need these for IAR testing this week and would be helpful for some activities that they will be doing over the course of the rest of the school year. Thank you!
IAR Testing
This week continues our state testing timeframe. Students will complete the three ELA IAR tests in homeroom. As always, we simply ask that students give their best efforts on these tests, and you can help by making sure they get a good night's sleep and eat a good breakfast. Here is the testing schedule:
Tuesday, April 12: ELA Session 1 (90 minutes)
Wednesday, April 13: ELA Session 2 (90 minutes)
Thursday, April 14: ELA Session 3 (90 minutes)
We will be taking these tests in the afternoon, after lunch since we need a large block of time.
PRIDE! Winner
Congratulations to Noah, who was the winner of the Determination PRIDE! Award for the month of March!
TGFD Home Workouts!
Each week of TGFD, your learner will bring home an assignment to complete as a family. This is to help facilitate a conversation at home about the topic covered in TGFD that week. Students will have a 10 point TGFD Homework Grade in their Social Science gradebook. In order to maintain the 10 points, they need to complete the assignment at home, and then return the paper with a family signature on it by the next TGFD class. If it is not returned in time, one point will be deducted from this grade. In the past, families have found these wonderful opportunities to foster genuine conversations with their learners, and I hope you will find the same!
