Newsletter 4/18-4/22

Here's What's Happening...

English/Language Arts: This week, students will learn about the final project for Unit 2 and get started on it.  This project has students write three magazine articles about a specific natural disaster (like Hurricane Katrina).  These articles will be written in 3 different text structures and the goal is to show how their event is a natural disaster.  In order to support their success, the project is broken into small chunks, with the focus this week on initial research and starting their first article.   They will also work on the Word Work List 10 slides this week.

Science: We continue to gather data about soil by watching a soil investigation and observing the characteristics of different soil samples.  Students will then compare and contrast the soil samples and formulate a hypothesis about which soil is better and why.

Social Studies: We will conclude our jigsaw activity from last week, and move forward into the final lesson of Chapter 7, which focuses on the French and Indian War.  Students will gather an understanding of why the war is being fought, as well as read the perspectives of the Native Americans at this time.

Advanced Math:  This week, we will learn about solving equations and then put those skills to work in real world problem solving contexts.  Students will have a homework review on our first five lessons on Friday.

ISA Testing
This week continues our state testing timeframe.  Students will be completing the Illinois Science Assessment, which is comprised of three days of testing.  As always, we simply ask that students give their best efforts on these tests, and you can help by making sure they get a good night's sleep and eat a good breakfast.  Here is the testing schedule:

Tuesday, April 19: ISA Session 1 (60 minutes)
Wednesday, April 20: ISA Session 2 (60 minutes)
Thursday, April 21: ISA Session 3 (60 minutes)

We will be taking these tests in the afternoon after lunch.

TGFD Home Workouts!
Each week of TGFD, your learner will bring home an assignment to complete as a family. This is to help facilitate a conversation at home about the topic covered in TGFD that week. Students will have a 10 point TGFD Homework Grade in their Social Science gradebook. In order to maintain the 10 points, they need to complete the assignment at home, and then return the paper with a family signature on it by the next TGFD class. If it is not returned in time, one point will be deducted from this grade. In the past, families have found these wonderful opportunities to foster genuine conversations with their learners, and I hope you will find the same!
