Newsletter 2/6-2/10

Here's What's Happening...

English/Language Arts: The focus this week will be on our first text of module 3, entitled "Eruption!  The Science of Volcanoes and Saving Lives".  We will begin with our study of the important vocabulary words.  Then we will focus on the skills of making and confirming predictions, using context to determine meaning of multiple-meaning words, and spiraling back to text structure.

Science: Students will have another opportunity to practice writing a claim and backing it up with evidence.  They will also look at the importance of nutrients in soil.

Social Studies: We focus our last lesson on the rest of the 13 original colonies, and the characteristics of the three regions they are divided into.

Advanced Math:   This week students will apply strategies for dividing fractions to problem solving situations.  Then we will review lessons 1-10 in preparation for a quiz on Wednesday.  We will finish the week by preparing for our student led conferences!

Important Info:

Too Good for Drugs

Students enjoyed our first session of Too Good for Drugs, which focused on how to set good goals.  Students received their first weekly homework assignment, which is to sit down with their family and create some family goals.  As I explained last week, students will receive a homework assignment after each session of TGFD.  They will have a week to complete it with their family at home, and then return it with a signature to show it was done together.  You will see a TGFD Homework Bank assignment in our Social Sciences gradebook.  Students will receive 10/10 points for this homework bank.  If an assignment is not completed and returned on time, one point will be deducted from the homework bank. Not only is this a great opportunity to facilitate conversations at home, it also helps with doing some "long term" planning since they have a week to complete it.  I hope you enjoy these activities and I appreciate your partnership and support at home!

Valentine's Day

On Friday, we spent some time discussing expectations for our upcoming Valentine's Day holiday.  Here are the highlights of what we discussed:

  • Students may bring Valentines for the class.  If they choose to bring Valentines, they must bring Valentines for every person in the class.  They were given a class list so they can address the Valentines if they would like, but it is not necessary.
  • Students can bring a store bought, individually packaged treat for their classmates if they would like.  These will not be opened at school and will be sent home to be enjoyed.  If purchasing food items, please note that we do have individuals with allergies to peanuts, kiwi, pineapple, and gelatin.
  • We will enjoy a class party, run by our room parent volunteers the afternoon of Valentine's Day.  Students will enjoy treats and games during the party!
  Photo Corner!

Congratulations to Dania, who was the January winner of the Positive Attitude PRIDE! award!

Corporal Albright took a few minutes at the end of TGFD to explain the equipment she carries on her vest!

Students enjoyed reading each other's narrative writing and leaving positive notes to celebrate what they liked about it!
