Newsletter 2/13-2/17

Here's What's Happening...

English/Language Arts: We will start the week working on vocabulary for our next selection from Module 3, entitled "Between the Glacier and the Sea: The Alaska Earthquake."  This is actually a video that students will watch to learn about this natural disaster.  We will work on the skill of summarizing, focusing on how to summarize information from diverse media formats.  We will also learn about media techniques in order to help us better understand what we are watching.  Students will still take a selection quiz on the material at the end of the week.

Science: Students will look at the importance of nutrients in soil.

Social Studies: We will wrap up learning about the 13 colonies with an in class assessment, and then begin looking at the colony project students will complete in small groups.

Advanced Math:   We are going to finish Unit 4 this week. Students will learn about dividing fractions by comparing lengths and answering the questions of the form "How many times as long?"  Then they will apply what they know about multiplying and dividing fractions to determine the area of rectangles and the volume of rectangular prisms.  They will take a test on Unit 4 on Thursday.

Important Info:

Valentine's Day

We are looking forward to celebrating Valentine's Day on Tuesday!  Students will be making a bag to bring home their valentines!  As a reminder, here are the expectations for Valentines:

  • Students may bring Valentines for the class.  If they choose to bring Valentines, they must bring Valentines for every person in the class.  They were given a class list so they can address the Valentines if they would like, but it is not necessary.
  • Students can bring a store bought, individually packaged treat for their classmates if they would like.  These will not be opened at school and will be sent home to be enjoyed.  If purchasing food items, please note that we do have individuals with allergies to peanuts, kiwi, pineapple, and gelatin.
  • We will enjoy a class party, run by our room parent volunteers the afternoon of Valentine's Day.  Students will enjoy treats and games during the party!
