Here's What's Happening...
English/Language Arts: We will begin the second part of our unit on Challenges this week. In this second part, students will engage in literature circles. They will be assigned a book at their appropriate level, will be given a reading assignment to do, and then will complete a role sheet focused on one of our skills. Then, they will meet with a small group of other students who are reading the same book. During this meeting, they will discuss their completed role sheet and work collaboratively to put their ideas together and complete one role sheet as a group. Students will be given some time to read and complete their role sheet in class, but they may need to finish it for homework to be prepared for the lit circles meeting. This week, they will work on summarizing by completing the Super Summarizer role, as well as work on questioning and finding evidence by completing the Discussion Director role. In addition to lit circles, students will work on Word Work List 5 slides and engage in a writing lesson entitled "What is my story really about?"
Social Studies: Students continue to develop their use of cause and effect skills as they learn about Jamestown. They will complete an assessment on Jamestown on Monday. They will also explore the five themes of geography through a small group project on Tuesday. We will spend the rest of the week looking at the colonies the French and Dutch established in the Americas.
Advanced Math: We began Unit 3 last week, and will continue to move through the unit this week. This unit is all about Unit Rates and Percentages. Our lessons this week focus on using unit rates in a variety of ways, as well as an introduction to the meaning of the word percent, and being able to calculate a percentage of a number. Before we begin the percentage lessons, students will have a take home quiz to complete!
Important Info:
Book Project due Friday!
The independent book project is due on Friday, December 10th! The final copy of the project is a digital assignment posted in ELA Google Classroom, in the Classwork tab, in the Unit 1 Book Project section. Students also received a bright red paper that contains the rubric for the project. We have discussed how it should guide their work on the project. If they can't find the bright red sheet, no worries - a digital copy is also linked in the final copy digital assignment! Please encourage your learner to ask any questions they may have - I am happy to help clarify and guide them as needed!
