Newsletter 5/2-5/6

Here's What's Happening...

English/Language Arts: Students will revise their first article and begin their second article this week.  They also will complete the Word Work List 11 sort and definitions.

Science: This week, students will learn more about decomposers and use the online Sim to investigate the effects of decomposers on soil.  They will then practice writing a claim and providing evidence to answer why they think the soil in the project area is different than the soil in the healthy rain forest.

Social Studies: We end our school year by looking at the road to the American Revolution.  This week, students will learn about the Stamp Act and Townshend Acts, and how the colonists reacted to these new ideas coming from King George III in England.

Advanced Math:  Students will be reviewing the first nine lessons of Unit 6 on Monday in order to prepare for a quiz on these topics on Tuesday.  Then, we switch to the next section of Unit 6, which focuses on exponents.  Students will extend their work with expressions to evaluate numerical and variable expressions with whole number exponents.

Important Info:

The Transition Begins!
As we enter our last month of school, your learner will have a variety of opportunities to begin their transition to Lakeview Junior High.  Dr. Foster, the prinicipal of Lakeview, stopped by our classroom for about 10 minutes on Friday just to give a brief introduction and welcome to the students.  This week, students will head to Lakeview on Tuesday for a presentation from the Lakeview Leadership Team and a tour of Lakeview.  Then, on Friday, we have the opportunity to visit Lakeview again to watch the dress rehearsal of the first act of the Lakeview Musical, Shrek, Jr.  While these transition activities are fun and exciting, it can also elicit other emotions as well.  This is a great opportunity to engage in some open dialogue with your learner about how they are feeling as their time at Prairieview comes to an end and their time at Lakeview draws near.  Please let me know if you have any questions or anything arises that I can help with!

TGFD Home Workouts!
Each week of TGFD, your learner will bring home an assignment to complete as a family. This is to help facilitate a conversation at home about the topic covered in TGFD that week. Students will have a 10 point TGFD Homework Grade in their Social Science gradebook. In order to maintain the 10 points, they need to complete the assignment at home, and then return the paper with a family signature on it by the next TGFD class. If it is not returned in time, one point will be deducted from this grade. In the past, families have found these wonderful opportunities to foster genuine conversations with their learners, and I hope you will find the same!
