Newsletter 8/22-8/26

Here's What's Happening...

English/Language Arts: We will start our year by building writing stamina, as well as developing different techniques for coming up with ideas to write about.

Science: We won't get to any science lessons this week!

Social Studies: We begin our year with a lesson about why we should study history.  Then, students will learn about primary and secondary sources.

Advanced Math:  We will work on our get to know you activities, and then complete an introductory lesson in Desmos, the main resource we use.  At the end of the week, we will get started on our first unit, which focuses on Area and Surface Area.  The first lesson focuses on understanding that the word area refers to how much of the plane a shape covers.  It also helps learners describe strategies for determining the area of a non-rectangular shape in their own words. I will send home a family letter that describes the key concepts of the unit!

Important Info:

Soft Start
One thing I am working on building this year is a collection of activities for a technique called soft start.  A soft start is a simple way for students to ease into their school day by selecting an activity to work on as the day gets started.  They can work independently, in partners, or in small groups.  It's a great use of our 15 minute arrival window, and will serve as our morning meeting activity at least twice a week.  Here are some items I'm looking for - if you happen to have some of these going unused at your place and would like to donate them to our class, it would be much appreciated!
  • Legos
  • Puzzles
  • Playing Cards
  • Crafts
I've also put together an Amazon Wish List.  Click HERE to see it!

We had an amazing first week together! Here are some snapshots of some of the activities we did!
