Here's What's Happening...

English/Language Arts: We begin Module 2 of our Into Reading resource.  Module 2 is entitled What a Story! and focuses on the essential question "How does genre affect the way a story is told?"  We will spend our week introducing this question and doing some initial exploration of genre.  Then we will work with the first text in the module, entitled "Airborn."  We will work on vocabulary, as well as look at how to synthesize ideas in the text to improve comprehension, as well as identifying literary elements, figurative language, and analyzing character perspective.

Science: Students will use the online Sim to investigate where energy in an ecosystem comes from.  They will be looking for evidence for two different claims and use the evidence to decide which claim is better.  They will also have the opportunity to work in groups to create a terrarium, which they will observe over the next three weeks to see how it grows and thrives.

Social Studies: We will begin Chapter 5, which focuses on the colonization of America by the English.  Students will learn about Roanoke and Jamestown.  Our focus in this chapter will be to identify what types of things help make a colony successful.

Advanced Math:    We will start the week by engaging in reflection on Unit 2.  Then we will move into Unit 3, which focuses on Unit Rates and Percentages.  The first three lessons focus on measurements and how to utilize ratios/rates in order to convert measurements.  Students will have a checkpoint at the end of the week on these lessons.
