Newsletter 4/10-4/14

Here's What's Happening...

English/Language Arts: We will work on the text entitled "Explore the Wild West!" this week.  We will discuss the skill of synthesizing as well as identifying word gaps as we read.  In addition, students will learn about homophones and homographs, as well as review central idea and text structures again.

Science: We will work on the first text of our Modeling Matter unit, which is entitled "Made of Matter."  Students will complete the Anticipation Guide for this text.

Social Studies: We will move out of the 13 English colonies and take a look at what has been happening with the other nations and their quest for colonization of the Americas.  This will lead us to the understanding of what contributes to the start of the French and Indian War.

Advanced Math:   We will begin Unit 6 this week.  We start with learning about solving equations by reasoning with unknown values, and making connections between tape diagrams, equations, and situations.  Then we will introduce the strategy of using a balance hanger to help us understand how to solve equations.

Important Info:

TGFD Week 8

In week 8, students learned about alcohol and its harmful effects, especially on the brain.  Homework this week requires you and your learner to create a list of activities your learner enjoys doing and then discussing how the effects of alcohol could impact your learner participating in those activities. Please remember to sign and return the homework page by Thursday!

IAR Testing

This week, students will take the Reading portion of the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR).  This is a state assessment that evaluates how students are doing with meeting Reading standards.  These tests do not affect their grades and are not used to help with making decisions for Lakeview.  Even so, we ask students to give their best efforts, and you can help at home by making sure they get a good night's sleep and have a good breakfast in the morning.  The two test sessions are 90 minutes each and will be taken in our homeroom classroom on Tuesday and Thursday between 10-11:30am.  It might be a good idea to ensure they have a good snack too!
