Newsletter 4/3-4/7

Here's What's Happening...

English/Language Arts: We will open Module 4 this week, which is entitled "The Wild West."  We start with the module introduction, which gets us thinking about our essential question: "What character traits were needed in people who settled the West?"  We will also do a review of text structures, and zoom in on the text structure of Cause & Effect as we read the introductory text entitled "Why Go West?"  We will also introduce the vocabulary for our first full text, entitled "Explore the Wild West!"  Students will complete Vocab squares for the words, and engage in a collaborative activity called "One of These Things is Not Like the Others."

Science: We will discuss and make a list of properties of matter.

Social Studies: Students will wrap up their scripts for the informational video and practice so that we can record on Thursday!

Advanced Math:   We will review the Unit 5 test and complete our Unit reflection sheet.  Look for the Unit 6 Family Resource to come home on Monday!  The remainder of the week will be used for IAR testing.

Important Info:

TGFD Week 7

In week 7, students learned about peer pressure and strategies they can use to help them get away from negative peer pressure situations.  Homework this week requires you and your learner to play a game of trying different peer pressure strategies for different situations. Please remember to sign and return the homework page by Thursday!

IAR Testing

This week, students will take the Math portion of the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR).  This is a state assessment that evaluates how students are doing with meeting Math standards.  These tests do not affect their grades and are not used to help with making decisions for Lakeview.  Even so, we ask students to give their best efforts, and you can help at home by making sure they get a good night's sleep and have a good breakfast in the morning.  The three test sessions are 60 minutes each and will be taken in their Math classrooms on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 12:35-1:55pm.  It might be a good idea to ensure they have a good lunch too!
