Newsletter 4/17-4/21

Here's What's Happening...

English/Language Arts: We will wrap up our work on the text entitled "Explore the Wild West!" this week.  We will review central idea, text structures, and author's craft again.  They will take the selection quiz on Wednesday.  Then we will begin our next text, entitled "The Celestials' Railroad" by working with our vocabulary words.

Science: We will look at how chromatography can help determine if a product contains a particular food color dye.  We will also use pasta to create a model of a mixture, and then explore how we might be able to separate the mixture into its separate components.  This will help reveal some properties of molecules.

Social Studies: We will continue to explore and learn about the French and Indian War.  Students will complete an in class checkpoint on this material at the end of the week.

Advanced Math:   We continue Unit 6 this week by completing an activity called Swap and Solve, where students will connect equations to situations by writing their own situations to match equations and then trading with classmates to solve.  This leads us into our first checkpoint of the unit, which students will complete on Tuesday.  Then we will move into the second part of the unit, which focuses on exploring what equivalent expressions with variables are and lead into learning about the distributive property.

Important Info:

TGFD Week 9

In week 9, students learned about the harmful effects of tobacco use.  Homework this week requires you and your learner to investigate some of the chemicals found in cigarettes and identify other common products that include these chemicals. Please remember to sign and return the homework page by Thursday!

Field Trip!

On Friday, students received a permission slip for an upcoming field trip to Naper Settlement.  We are excited to provide this unique learning opportunity for our class!  Please sign and return the bottom portion of the form by Friday, April 28th.  Also, if you are interested in being a chaperone for the trip, don't forget to reply to the email I sent on Friday about field trip chaperones!

Photo Corner!

Students worked together to read "Explore the Wild West!" and have collaborative discussions to identify word gaps, as well as answer discussion questions about the text.
