Newsletter 4/24-4/28

Here's What's Happening...

English/Language Arts: We will spend this week working on our new text, "The Celestials' Railroad."  Students will review and practice the skill of monitoring and clarifying as they read this text.  We will also work on Central Idea again, as well as homophones and homographs.  Students will take the selection quiz for this text at the end of the week.

Science: We will use pasta to create a model of a mixture, and then explore how we might be able to separate the mixture into its separate components.  This will help reveal some properties of molecules.  We will also use a "fan model" to help students better understand how chromatography works.

Social Studies: We started the checkpoint, but need to wrap it up this week.  We will spend most of the week focusing on Science.

Advanced Math:   We continue learning about the distributive property this week.  Students will then review for a quiz over Lessons 1-9 in Unit 6.  We will end our week with our pie celebration!  Our class made a deal on "Pi Day" that if all students met or exceeded an agreed upon target score for a quiz or test, they could earn a Pie Day celebration.  Well, they met their goal with the Unit 5 test, and we will be celebrating their achievement this Friday!

Important Info:

TGFD Week 10

In week 10, students learned about the dangers of marijuana use. They also had an opportunity to try on goggles that simulated what vision is like when under the influence of alcohol.   There was no homework assignment to complete together at home this week.  However, students received their culminating assignment, which is to write a letter that addresses how they felt about the TGFD program, what they have learned, and why it is important to stay drug, alcohol, and violence free.  This assignment will be due on Wednesday, May 3rd.

Open House!

We are so excited to invite you to PV's Open House and Book Fair on Wednesday, April 26th.  There will be many things for your learner to share with you, an opportunity to say hello to teachers, and a book fair in the gym.  I hope you have the chance to stop by!

Photo Corner!

I didn't get a chance to snap any pictures this week!
