Newsletter 2/14-2/18

Here's What's Happening...

English/Language Arts: We didn't get to the brainstorming activity using Post It notes last week.   So, on Tuesday students will use the post it notes to capture what they know about natural disasters, and then will group their ideas together.  These will then be used to help them write a flash draft on Wednesday.  Remember, when students write a flash draft, we focus on getting the ideas on paper and not worrying about spelling or grammar and such.  Just like narrative writing, we then go through a series of lessons to help improve our flash draft.  We will wrap up the week by circling back to more practice on paraphrasing!

Science: Students will learn about the importance of integrating data into their scientific arguments.  They will write a practice scientific argument, receive some feedback, and then complete the Chapter 1 scientific argument on Wednesday.

Social Studies: Students continue their colony project.  They will begin making the brochure to advertise the qualities of their colony!

Advanced Math:  We move on to Unit 5, which focuses on decimal operations.  We begin the unit by exploring decimal models, and using those to help add and subtract decimals.

Important Info:

Virtual "Field Trip" this week!
As we celebrate Black History Month, we look for opportunities to celebrate those individuals who have made significant contributions to our history. This Thursday, students will be treated to a virtual performance of a play about Martin Luther King, Jr. We look forward to honoring this important historical figure and learning more about the man he was.
